This complex project included successfully installing data center equipment in an operating data center. A new 100-ton, 25 ton per module, modular chiller unit was installed with one module redundancy, as well as new chilled water supply and return piping for four new Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units. The four new CRAC units were installed with all associated piping, valves and controls inside of the operating data center. Factory-trained manufacturer’s representatives performed factory field testing, start-up and commissioning of the CRAC units. Six CRAC unit return air intake hood extensions were installed to facilitate a future implementation of a cold aisle containment system.
New NEMA1 3000A 480V/227V 75 KAIC generator paralleling switchgear was installed to support operations. Two (2) 225 KVA 480V/208V/120V power distribution units with static switches were provided and installed as part of this project. The project team also provided and installed two (2) power distribution units (PDU’s) and eight (8) remote distribution units (RDU’s) within the operating data center. Existing lighting was removed and replaced with new fixtures. Existing wall mounted CCTV cameras were relocated due to the installation of return air plenum extensions on the top of the CRAC units.
Utilizing our experience and expertise, Rand was able to overcome two primary obstacles to ensure a successful, high quality project outcome. The Rand team had to redesign the paralleling switchgear room foundations because the original foundation design for the paralleling gear would not fit the new equipment footprint as designed. The problem was due to interference with the existing duct banks. Rand reconfigured the footprint design of the paralleling switch gear room, then implemented the design and installation. The successful identification and resolution of this design concern while maintaining schedule demonstrates Rand’s ability to adapt to unforeseen problems and adjust our planned work operations. Additionally, Rand had to set up temporary generators for backup while waiting on the City for power to ensure that no power supply was interrupted. Rand worked with KCP&L to install a new interrupter and transformer pad for the tie-in. This coordination and change demonstrates Rand’s ability to meet our clients’ needs no matter the circumstances that may arise.
